The wall street bailout bill is so important to get passed quickly...
... that there is time to tack on 40 amendments (when I stopped counting, there may be hundreds). The amendments only change the bill size from 113 pages to 451. Quick, vote yes, we don't have time to analyze all of this!!!! You wouldn't want zingers such as the following to slip by without a yes would you!? :

"Seven-year cost recovery period for motorsports racing track facility."

"Permanent authority for undercover operations."

"Accelerated depreciation for business property on Indian reservations."

Don't forget the ever important ammendment:
"Short title."

Not to mention extended tax breaks for "manufacturers of certain wooden arrows designed for use by children."

Ok, now that one just can not stand! We need only the finest metal "yard jarts" for our children like I used to play with. This is too good:

"You better duck *@#$(@@#($!":

Why is that kind of crap even legal? It boggles me that a government can function when they only actually vote on a fraction of the actual issues.

I realize I am implicitly making the assumption that the US government is functional.

I hear rumors (from many places) that members of Congress (and their staff) often only read the summary of some fast moving bills.

I personally think 1 bill should = 1 topic. If it can't pass on its own 2 feet, then it shouldn't pass. Bribing other congressional leaders with addons just seems inherently wrong to me.
